Montana’s Best Kept Secret

November 6, 2012 by Jean Holy Smithereens 2 Comments

Yes, the magic of East Glacier continues. I tell you, this place is modern-day Narnia. I feel like we just crossed the woods from West to East Glacier , and suddenly everything is magic.

Well this will be my last post about this side of Montana. Such a beautiful state , she is. So I’m quite nostalgic to end the West/East Glacier series with this post. But wait, there’s more: I saved the best for last!

I believe I may have discovered Montana’s best kept secret: The Brown House.

The Brown House: more than just a brown house.

Well, best kept secret in accommodation that is. Most people who visit Glacier National Park will very likely stay inside the park or the numerous accommodations just outside the park’s outskirts.

I avoided this when choosing our accommodation in East Glacier. I wanted a specialty accommodation- I wanted to stay in a cottage.

And this quest for a cottage led us much much further away from the East Glacier, or in the “main town” where most tourists are. And when I say further away, I mean we were already outside the area:

Okay, that red area? That’s where my magic cottage is. And yes, it is inside Blackfeet reservation area. I was really thrilled to know this. The tax may be higher in this place due to it being a reservation area but so be it–if it will help the Blackfeet community I am all for it.
Sadly though many people avoid this area too because of the impression that they get with reservation areas. This worked to my advantage because well, this meant ZERO crowds.
So it was really just us and my magic cottage. Us and Terry, the owner of the cottage, and his wife/partner. Terry is a potter and while he rents out his 3 cottages (his own home is next to it), he also sells his own works. So the “lobby” of this place is like a very funky museum. I wasn’t able to take a photo , but believe me, the receiving area is a vintage collector’s delight.
We arrived early evening. Terry gave us the keys and that was the last we saw of him. Very unintrusive. Even if he just lived next door, we felt like it was just us 2 the entire time.
Not much from first glance of the cottage.
But let’s move closer. Starting with a peek from the window:
And finally, the interior:

This cottage was just a dream. It’s so spacious, very clean, the bathroom was warm and huge. I just wanted to LIVE there. Seriously. I had the BEST sleep in this cottage amongst all our USA accommodation. If anyone else knows what it’s like like to be in a place made of natural pine and cedar–you will understand that I was on an all time natural high.

When I woke up in the morning, everything was even lovelier.

our car was safely parked just outside.
pathway leading to the cottage

Patio area with swing where I can just idly sit and watch the afternoon pass by, sipping tea and reading a book. Or so I wish I had the time to do that!

I highly , highly suggest The Brown House of East Glacier, Montana . Just be aware that it is quite far from East Glacier (the national park) itself, about 40 minutes drive. But it is well, well WORTH. IT.

There isn’t much advertising or marketing for this place. And I think the owner wants it that way. Don’t rely on the “website” (where I linked below), as it isn’t really a fair representation of the place. Take my word, experience, and photographs for it.

thank you , come again.
