Interview: A Couple’s Love Affair with Sydney!

April 16, 2013 by Jean Holy Smithereens Leave a Comment

I thought it would be cool to start random interview-posts featuring other people’s travel styles and ideas. The more ideas, the merrier!

First time in Sydney? Wondering what to do in Sydney if you’ve only got a day?

I do have my own ideas, but I thought it would be better to ask other people’s point of view. In this blog post, I got to talk to young couple Judy Anne, 25, a retail associate  and Juan Miguel, 24, a creative director/producer.

 12 Apostles. Great Ocean Road.

Judy has been living in Sydney for 2 years now, while Juan Miguel (JM), recently visited her for a 5 week holiday. It was his first time in Sydney, and the couple’s first time in the city together as well.

Q: What were your first impressions of Australia/ Sydney?

Judy: First impression would automatically be IM FREEEEEEEE! Kidding aside, it would be Adventure fun and independence!

JM: Australia was full of surprises, the scenery was breathtaking and the people were very kind and        approachable.
Q:What ended up being your favourite place to hangout/chill?
Judy: It would have to be Newtown! Both of us are into arts and that scene, and everything is just different living in Newtown! All those crazy walls are just picture perfect
JM: Newtown ended up being my favorite place to be with all the vintage stores and different kinds of restaurants to eat in.

Q: Favourite place to eat in Sydney?
Judy: Fresh Sushi is THE best place ever! I always go for their Chicken Katsu and imagine it’s judt $10 for 8 huge scrumptious rolls! Cheap thrills are the best
JM: My favorite place to eat in Sydney was at Broadway Mall. The pizza and crepe there was indeed something else.

Q: How did you stick to your travel budget? Any tips?
Judy: You gotta figure out prolly a month ahead the things you wanna see, where you wanna go and stuff like that. I enjoy planning and organising our trips so ofcourse I always ask JM too before I book a certain activity. So yeah, how to stick to the travel budget? Plan ahead! 🙂
JM: Well honestly I had a problem with budgeting since there are a lot of things to do and places to go in Australia. It’s a good thing Dyanne was there to guide me with everything. My tip is to plan out everything and always bring extra cash with you at all times.
Q:What’s the funniest and weirdest thing you guys encountered on your trip around Australia?
Judy: There are heaps of funny memories I had with JM, everything is always real life comedy whenever I’m with him hahaha! BUT the incident that tops my list is when we were at Goldcoast, we just had the whole day trip at Movieworld and it was heavily raining, more like storming while we were there, then we went to the Dracula Haunted House in Surfer’s Paradise where we can’t back out it was fun and scary at the same time! And that time I accidentally rode a roller coaster as well. JM didn’t even warn me!!
JM: The funniest and weirdest trip we had was the time we went to Gordon’s Bay and on our way home I saw this guy with nothing but his underwear and backpack on. Weirdest and funniest thing I’ve ever seen. haha

Q: Where else did you go aside from Sydney?
Judy: We went to Melbourne and Goldcoast. Hopefully next time we’ll visit Cairns!
JM: We went to Melbourne, Goldcoast and a lot of towns outside Sydney.

Q: Among those, which is your favourite city?
Judy:Mine would be Goldcoast! Just love all the parks there! If not for the bad weather, it would’ve been awesome!
JM: I guess my favorite would be Melbourne with all it’s art and culture.

Q: How did you two find a long-term accommodation in Sydney? any recommendations?
Judy: Stumbled upon airbnb.com.au and turned out twas the best choice ever!
JM:We browsed the webstie www.airbnb.com and that site is where you can find everything! From short-term to long-term accommodations.

Q: If someone only had 1 full day to explore Sydney, what itinerary would you recommend?

Judy: 1 full day? I’d recommend, have a quick morning trip at Gordon’s Bay, it’s a beautiful inlet in Coogee it’s just pure serenity! Crystal clear waters and just fantastic view!! Plus if you get bored, you can have a walk to its neighbouring beaches Coogee, Bronte and Bondi. Then go for a nice walk along Paddington since it’s just right after Bondi, and to top the date off, watch a movie out in the open, more like splendour in the grass! Moonlight Cinema in Sydney is one of the best things to witness and experience– just make sure to book in a good movie! We watched The Rocky Horror Pictureshow there 🙂
JM:I would recommend going to Gordon’s Bay for a nice swim and scenery afterwards walk around Bondi Junction and cap off your day in one of the restaurants in Newtown.

Q: Any advice for other young couples wishing to explore Sydney for the first time on their own ?
Judy: Don’t be afraid to explore outside the touristy places! No worries if you guys get lost, the friendlies don’t bite– they’re actually quite happy to help you with whatever you need!
JM: My advice would be to plan out everything, bring extra cash other than your budget and don’t be afraid or be lazy to explore Sydney as it is a once in a lifetime experience..
