Where to Stay in Hunter Valley: Elfin Hill

September 8, 2013 by Jean Holy Smithereens Leave a Comment

A two-hour drive away from Sydney, Hunter Valley is one of Australia’s best known wine regions. It’s a perfect weekend or long-weekend getaway due to its proximity and easy drive.

While most people go to Hunter Valley for its wine and fabulous wine tours, I love the valley for my 2 favourite things: Cheese and Chocolate!

It’s easy to forget that you are just 2 hours away from the hustle and bustle of metropolitan Sydney because Hunter Valley just sets you in the mood for a weekend of pure food/wine indulgence and relaxation.

And what better way to complement this than staying in an accommodation that also sets the very lazy and relaxing mood?

P1030761-001I thought it would be best to ‘get away from it all’ by choosing an accommodation that wasn’t a hotel or the usual inn. I rarely do bed and breakfast accommodation but this charming house on a hill was just irresistible.

Elfin Hill accommodation has two very fine points that I love- the house itself, and the location.

P1030777This is the view you wake up to when you open the floor to ceiling of this wonderful little house.

Breakfast is served this way every morning, right outside the balcony. Well you can choose to have it inside the house but this is the best way to start your morning. Breakfast overlooking the valley.

All breads and croissants came freshly baked as they have their own bakery just behind the house.

And just behind that fence sits a nice chicken pen. I have fallen in love with country life!

Now inside the house:

That’s the door you enter and leave from, which is pretty much the back of the house. You can also enter from the balcony but that would be detouring.

The kitchen is comes equipped with microwave, coffee maker, fridge and even complimentary bottles of wine.

It has a huge living area, with floor to ceiling windows that come with total blackout curtains.

Toilet is pretty standard located beneath the stairs

My only gripe: the very square toilet bowl was pretty uncomfortable. Some designs look good because it’s unique however they’re not always the most functional/comfortable.

The house is a loft-type and the bedroom sits upstairs:

I had such a pleasant 2-night stay at the Elfin Hill that I found myself sad to leave the place. I fell in love with the surroundings and seclusion of the loft.

Would I stay here again next time I visit Hunter Valley? For the breakfast and views alone, definitely.

PS. I left Hunter Valley with this loot!
