Apart from travel , there are a few things of indulgence that make me go weak in the knees. One of them is spending time underwater (be it snorkelling or just light free diving), and the other is a good pampering at the spa.
So when I learned that Huvafen Fushi has an Underwater Spa Treatment in the Maldives, I had to read it twice to make sure it wasn’t a typo. That it didn’t just simply mean an “underwater-like spa treatment.”
Per Aquum has taken indulgence to the next level by opening the first ever Underwater Spa in the Maldives. (Yes, these are the same awesome guys that took Maldives’ cool to an uber-cool level by opening Maldives’ First Underwater Night Club in NIYAMA.)
I spent one splendid afternoon in Huvafen Fushi’s LIME Spa, where I was treated to “Fluidity”, a ridiculously wonderful treatment that has this dreamy description:
Experience massage on a whole new levellying face up “on the water, under the water”.An unrivalled treatment for comfort andrelaxation; the body is embraced and lifted byheated Hydrotherm water cushions. The heatof the water soothes painful areas as graceful, fluid massage movements evaporate musculartension leaving sheer, blissful sensations. Thebest massage experience in the most uniquetreatment space in the world.

Using the resort buggy, our Thakuru (Villa host / butler) dropped me off right at this jetty point. And this is where my afternoon of unforgettable pampering began.
In keeping to the LIME Spa trademark, I was given a cool lime drink at the spa reception.

I was also given a form to fill out my treatment preferences. What pressure do I prefer? (light to medium), Any areas to avoid? (stomach! as I’m ticklish), and any areas to concentrate on? (the head por favor!)

I was then ushered to the changing area, where lockers, showers and toilets are available. After I changed, my therapist led me to a separate area, where we are to descend several metres underwater.

As I followed my therapist down the stairs, I can slowly feel being transported to ‘another world’. A few steps down, and as soon as the stairway door closed, the sounds of the waves and wind outside died down, and soon it was all a tinge of magical blue, waters.., and serenity.

I was mesmerised by the fish and marine life curiously swimming by and having a peek into what probably seems like a cage to them.
“Shall we begin?”, the therapist politely brought me back to this un-real world.

The spa beds were lined with water mattresses so it was like being massaged into a semi-water bed. It’s an unbelievable sensation- seeing all blue, hearing the ambient wave music, and just as I felt like dozing off, my eyes flutter open as a trigger fish passes by.
You need not worry about missing the scene even when you are lying on your stomach. LIME Spa has cleverly placed a mirror just above the face well of the spa bed. This way you can still see all the action happening out in the ocean.

In any normal spa, I would just automatically drift off to snooze and enjoy the treatment. With this kind of treatment, there’s a battle of indulgence that takes place – shall we fight it and keep our eyes open and enjoy the mesmerising sight? Or just give in to those kneading hands working to relax you, and say “I’ll see you later” to the fish?
It’s a big battle of I.Q – Indulgence Quotient.
And whichever path you choose will yield favourable results.

I was given hot ginger and lime tea after the treatment, and I again lay in an indulgent stupor as I reflected on what just happened this afternoon:
The wonderful Fluidity treatment with a dose of live National Geographic channel festival not just on 3D, but LIVE? It definitely was a festival of senses that I shall always dreamily look back on.
