7 Ways to Save Money and the Environment

June 21, 2021 by Jean Holy Smithereens Leave a Comment

As a human, you can waste a lot of resources in a day. The worst part is, wasting all these resources costs you a ton of money, from your energy bill to the groceries in your fridge. If you want to save money and help protect the environment, try making these seven tips a part of your regular routine.

1. Don’t Buy Bottled Water

Plastic is one of the largest contributors to environmental waste, and bottled water is a huge source of plastic. Instead of wasting your money on bottled water, invest in a reusable water bottle that you can fill from the tap. You can upgrade to an insulated water bottle if you want to keep your drinks cold all day long, but anything is better than plastic.

2. Eat Less Meat

The production of meat also has a big impact on the environment, so cut out meat when you can to be more sustainable. Finding meatless meals can be tough on your own, but there are lots of great vegetarian cookbooks that can help you out. You can still get all the nutrients you need in a delicious meal, but eating one or two meatless meals a week will save you a lot.

3. Try Alternative Energy

If you really want to save money while protecting the environment, there’s no better option than converting to an alternative source of energy. Adding solar panels to your home is a great way to cut down on your monthly energy bill and reduce your carbon footprint. Alternative energy services also make it easy to connect with professionals who can install solar power systems.

4. Walk or Bike

Starting up your car to go to the store can be tempting, but it’s not always necessary. If you’re just going a few blocks away and you only need a couple of items, you can walk or ride a bike to save money on gas and reduce emissions. Not only that, but you also get free exercise which saves you money that you might otherwise spend on a gym membership to ride stationary bikes.

5. Reuse and Recycle

People have a bad habit of throwing things away when they’re done with them, but most things have some use other than sitting in a landfill. Instead of throwing everything away, make sure you separate your recycling. You can also reuse wasteful products before you recycle them or throw them away, including things like milk jugs and plastic crates. Repurposing and recycling is a great way to help the environment.

6. Use Less Water

The average person uses a lot of water, so reducing your water usage can make a substantial difference. Install low-flow aerators on your faucets and a low-flow showerhead in your shower. You should also try to take shorter showers and make sure you’re not running water when you do dishes or brush your teeth.

7. Buy Used

Getting some things new is essential, but buying used goods can help you save money and be more eco-friendly. Things like vehicles and electronics require a lot of resources to manufacture, so you can save a lot of money by buying used ones instead of new ones. Plus, more people buying used means there’s less of a demand for the manufacture of new products, which does even more to help protect the environment in the future.

One of the best parts about reducing your carbon footprint and protecting the environment is the fact that it can also save you a lot of money. If you want to save the environment while saving money, these tips are a great way to get started.
