Today’s Where is it Wednesday will be a little different. Not the usual breath-taking scenery, but the history of this piece will take your breath away as well.

This photo was taken at the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City, where the Aztec Calendar stone can be found. Excavated in December 1790, the stone is approximately 12 feet across and weighs approximately 24 tonnes. Modern archeologists believe it is more likely to have been used primarily as a ceremonial basin or ritual altar for gladiatorial sacrifices, than as an astrological or astronomical reference.
